3D Scanning for Sculptors, Artists & Makers

Accurate Digital Capture for Creative Work.

BluPrints3D works with sculptors, artists and independent makers who need precise digital versions of physical artwork β€” whether for casting, scaling, restoration, edition production or creative development.

The objective is not simply to scan an object. It is to create a reliable digital model that supports what comes next.

Every project begins with the intended outcome. A scan only has value if it integrates properly into your creative or fabrication workflow.

If you’re new to 3D scanning and would like a broader overview of the process and typical file outputs, see how 3D scanning works .

Supporting the Transition from Physical to Digital

Artists typically turn to 3D scanning at key stages of development β€” when something needs to move forward without risking the original.

When a clay original needs to move into bronze. When a fragile plaster piece must be archived before moulding. When a collector requests a scaled edition. When symmetry needs subtle correction. When a sculpture must be repaired digitally rather than reworked physically.

Instead of rebuilding from the beginning, scanning provides an accurate foundation that can be refined, adjusted and fabricated while preserving the integrity of the original.

Studio-Based & On-Site Scanning

Most sculptural projects are scanned within the studio, where lighting and positioning can be carefully controlled to capture clean geometry and surface detail.

For larger works or pieces that cannot be moved safely, scanning can be carried out on-site across Frome, Bath, Bristol and the South West.

Based in Frome , BluPrints3D supports artists across Somerset and the wider South West region.

Structured-light scanning captures fine surface character without physical contact, making it suitable for clay, plaster, wax, resin, wood and stone. Temporary scanning sprays can be used when necessary and are non-permanent.

From Scan to Usable Digital Model

Raw scan data is processed into clean, watertight geometry that is correctly scaled and prepared for its intended purpose.

This may include surface refinement while preserving tool marks, digital repair of minor damage, subtle symmetry balancing, or preparation for mould making and casting workflows.

File Type Best For Notes
STL 3D printing / fabrication Most common deliverable
OBJ Mesh workflows Great for editing
PLY Colour capture When colour data matters

The objective is always to deliver files that are ready to use β€” not rough meshes requiring further correction.

Integrated Design & 3D Printing

BluPrints3D operates as an independent scanning and fabrication studio, so projects can move from physical artwork to digital refinement and back into production without switching providers.

After scanning, pieces can be adjusted for scale, proportion, symmetry and structure, then prepared for fabrication or prototyping. Large-format FDM 3D printing is available where a physical prototype or scaled version is required.

This integrated workflow is ideal for edition production, scaled variations, or preparing artwork for downstream processes where clean, reliable geometry matters.

If your project moves beyond creative replication into functional parts, prototyping or production workflows, see 3D Scanning for Product Design & Manufacturing .

Working with Foundries & Fabricators

Many sculptors require digital files that integrate smoothly into casting or fabrication processes. Scanning can support mould development, pattern scaling and preparation for production.

Files can be prepared to meet foundry requirements, ensuring geometry is watertight and suitable for downstream use. Where needed, adjustments can be made without compromising artistic intent.

Pricing Guidance

Typical Project Type Guide Price
Straightforward studio-based sculptures Β£100–£150
Complex / larger / multi-piece collections Β£200–£500

On-site scanning or oversized pieces that cannot be transported to the studio are quoted individually based on scale, access and processing time.

All quotes include scanning and processed, usable files β€” not simply raw capture data.

A custom print of a hare that I originally made in paper mache. The sculpture was professionally scanned and reproduced with fantastic detail. It was completed in time to give to my mum for her 80th birthday and she loves it. Thank you.
