From Passion to Profession: My 15-Year Journey in 3D Design

For the past seven years, I’ve completed a wide range of 3D printing, 3D scanning, and digital modelling projects, supporting hundreds of customers with everything from artistic commissions to functional prototypes. Alongside my service work, I’ve produced and sold thousands of 3D-printed products both online and at events such as Comic Con and creative maker markets.

Today, my print farm operates almost 24/7, with a fleet of machines capable of handling projects of all sizes—up to 40cm in any direction on my largest printer. The 3D scanner I use is renowned in the industry for its ultra-high precision, capable of capturing small or large objects with accuracy down to 0.02mm. This level of detail allows me to support projects requiring exceptional fidelity, whether for digital archiving, restoration, product development, or creative reproduction. I’ve had the pleasure of working with individual hobbyists, product designers, sculptors, and cosplay creators, as well as small businesses and commercial clients both locally and internationally.

My journey with 3D design software began 15 years ago as a teenager and eventually led me to study Computer Animation & VFX at university, graduating in 2020. In spring 2019, I launched BluPrints3D, a 3D design and 3D printing business, and balanced its early growth alongside completing my degree. Managing both taught me valuable lessons in organisation and resilience. After graduating in 2020, I committed to BluPrints3D full time, continuing to develop my skills and grow the business through dedication and attention to detail. Since then, I’ve built a leading local presence in the 3D printing and scanning niche and received recognition through multiple awards in South West England. What started as a dream has now become a sustainable full-time career, supported by loyal clients and thousands of online 3D product orders.

BluPrints3D Team & Capabilities

I handle all 3D printing and 3D scanning in-house, ensuring quality and consistency across every project. When a project requires advanced 3D modelling from scratch, I work with a small team of highly skilled designers I’ve brought together and partnered with for several years. Each specialises in different software disciplines, and once their modelling work is complete, it always returns to me for refinement and approval before moving forward in the project pipeline. This ensures every stage meets the standards my clients expect.

For organic or artistic forms, we use tools such as Autodesk Maya, which is ideal for refining 3D scan data, sculpting detailed shapes, and preparing complex geometry for 3D printing. For precise engineering-style modelling, we work in software like SolidWorks. This approach ensures every project is matched with the ideal workflow and technical expertise, including generating the correct file formats required for manufacturing—such as STL for 3D printing, STEP for CNC machining, and other industry-standard outputs when needed.
